Juniors and Seniors
As a Junior or Senior at Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club, you are required to have done your JLA or LA, depending on your age. Qualified Juniors and Seniors are also required to do Annual Retests to ensure that they are up to date on the best techniques and that they are physically capable of completing the possible tasks of a lifeguard. Juniors range from the age of 14-18 years old and Seniors from 19+ years old. As a Junior competitor, you compete individually in U15, U17 and U19, and in Junior teams. As a Senior competitor, you compete as a Senior in individual and team events. The Juniors and Seniors of Clifton make up all the members who are responsible for the safety of our beaches over the seasons’ weekends and public holidays, thus they play a vital role in keeping the Club alive.
THE LIFEGUARD COURSE
The course comprises a series of modules covering sea conditions, first aid and CPR, rescue techniques, signals and radio communication. The exam comprises a written test on all you learn, examination of your CPR technique, a run-swim- run in less than 10 minutes, signals and all the rescue techniques.

Masters
Over the years we have been and are still fortunate to have many of our Masters as members and parents of a significant number of Nippers and in some cases juniors and some active committee members. This is probably the ultimate test of any club and a reflection of our club ethos.
Masters are members over the age of 30 years. Masters need to have a qualification: a Bronze Medallion (BM), a Surf Proficiency Award (SPA) or a Surf Lifeguard Award (SLA or LA). The Bronze Medallion is still awarded in countries overseas and recognised as the minimum requirement to be a Lifeguard.
The Surf Lifeguard Award (SLA or LA), prior to 2003 referred to as the Surf Proficiency Award (SPA), is the standard qualification required to perform lifeguard duties, be this in a voluntary or professional role. Masters wishing to compete in the annual competitions do not require Duty Hours or a Retest. If they wish to do Duty, an Annual Retest is still required.
