Challenge Yourself, Empower Your Life: Britt Hyland’s Journey to Becoming a Clifton Lifeguard

For Britt Hyland, the decision to take on the Clifton Lifeguard Course was more than just a challenge – it was an opportunity to rediscover her inner strength and embrace a new way to connect with the ocean. As a swim and triathlon coach based on the Atlantic Seaboard, Britt had spent years in the water, but this experience would push her limits in ways she hadn’t imagined.

What Inspired Britt to Take the Plunge?

Britt credits her close friend, Rod Bloom, for inspiring her to join the lifeguard course. “Rod raved about his experience last season,” she recalls. “As a 50+ year old, it can be daunting to take on something so physically demanding, but with Rod’s encouragement and stories, I just had to do it.” For Britt, the course was also an extension of her philosophy as a coach. “I believe in not just standing on the deck and calling the shots. I want to be in the pool and ocean with my swimmers, learning and leading by example.”

Overcoming Tough Training Moments

Despite her extensive experience as an open-water swimmer, Britt quickly realised that the lifeguard course was no easy feat. “From Day 1, I was challenged and had numerous ‘why on earth am I doing this’ moments,” she admits. Her toughest challenge came during a practice rescue with the box line in rough waters.

“I arrogantly assumed I’d glide out like a pro,” she says, laughing. Instead, she found herself struggling against the waves and making a rookie mistake: attempting to rescue the patient without proper equipment. “I thought I was amazing swimming out with my bare hands until the instructor reminded me how bad that call was. It was such a humbling and eye-opening moment.”

Through determination and guidance from her instructors, Britt pushed through the challenges. “Rod kept telling me to hang in there, and he was right. I ended up loving every moment of it.”

Empowered and Energised

Completing the lifeguard course has had a transformative impact on Britt’s mindset. “I feel so empowered and much more confident in the waves and swell. I have a newfound respect for lifesavers and the responsibilities they carry,” she says. The experience also gave her a fresh perspective on personal growth. “We often think we’re too old to try something new, but this course completely shifted that mindset for me. It’s given me renewed energy and a sense of purpose.”

Britt’s Advice for Aspiring Lifeguards

For anyone considering the lifeguard course, Britt offers one key piece of advice: “Swim fitness only comes from swimming. Spend time in the pool or open water building up your endurance with regular 20-30 minute swims. Don’t beat yourself up about the swim test – it’s doable, but you need to be prepared.”
