Course Requirements and Information

The LA/JLA qualification is a world recognised qualification and the instructors at Clifton are all qualified instructors or instructors-in- training. We also have highly qualified paramedics helping with the medical aspect of training. The course usually takes about 3 months as we only train on Sundays where we cover one module per day. We run courses all year round so please contact us for details on upcoming courses. As soon as a course finishes you or your son/daughter will be contacted for the start of the next course.

OTHER THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
On completion of the course you are assigned to a Squad for Active Duty in the summer months. If you are over the age of 30 you are not required to do duty at all. Each squad is assigned a weekend (Saturday and Sunday) each month throughout summer (Saturday 12h00 to 18h00 and Sunday 10h00 to 18h00). We have 4 Squads: Arcadia, Barker, Cherry and Duiker.
You are required to be on duty on the duty dates assigned to the Squad, if you cannot make duty you MUST find a substitute for the duty day. It is unacceptable to miss a duty day without finding a substitute.
Lifeguard training doesn’t stop after completing the LA/JLA course. There are many exciting qualifications offered by Clifton Surf to further your, or your son’s/daughter’s knowledge in Lifesaving including: LA/JLA IRB (inflatable rescue boat) Crewman (for over 16s and after one years’ service at Clifton) IRB Driver (for over 16s and after one years’ service at Clifton) First Aid Level 3
Yes! Another exciting aspect of Lifesaving after completing the LA/JLA course is PRO duty which is paid lifeguarding. Since Clifton is a Blue Flag Beach the City Of Cape Town pays lifeguards to work during the duration of summer. To work PRO duty you can apply to work PRO through the City Of Cape Town’s job application channels.
